Just what goes on after rehearsal?

For some just practising at home, coming to rehearsals and playing performances is just not enough. For these individuals MCB caters with a regular lavish after rehearsal event at Curley Joe's just around the corner from the Kieth Ford hall.

At the establishment band members such as our 2nd tenor horn Ditch can be found feasting on a well earned iced chocalate - the best iced chocolate in Melbourne according to some.

Also too it is not uncommon to find Rebecca and Nathan. On furlough from the land of the long white cloud these two are not only deeply in love but are as deeply into the social aspects of banding as the music itselt. In fact they chose MCB based on its personality which I think we like to think is serious about our music but not so serious as to let it get in the way of an enjoyable experience.

And last but not least in this string of three photo taken but last night is Bruno with another percussionist who is so new I am yet to know here name - don't worry I'm sure somebody will comment to let me know what it is. Bruno we all hope you work that phone out soon - my goodness so serious!

The characters that make up a band.

Like any ensemble, the Moreland City Band (MCB) is full of characters both young and old. It seems that people from all walks of life can come together easily to play music and this is especially so for the MCB.

Lets take Betty for example. Betty has been with the band for about a year now. She does not actually play an instrument but she is without doubt an instrumental member of the band. Her work organising extra funding and catering is increasingly important as the band becomes more and more active.

Hiromi represents the cultural leading edge of banding. - Japanese she has travelled to Australia to study at a local university for a few years. She joined MCB some six months ago and recently travelled with us to the national competitions in Brisbane playing 3rd cornet.

John is quite obviously a jolly fellow and a solid 1st tenor horn player for the band for some three years now. Just finishing his university degree John is a budding professional french horn player looking to gain entry into the army band through upcoming auditions.

As you can no doubt tell from the expression from this little fellow the MCB is definitely a family friendly outfit. The rehearsal studio has an extra room with space for the younger onces to get some shut-eye during practise sessions - how they do that with a full brass band rehearsing next door I'll never know :)

Partners, girl friends and boy friends also make up an important part of the MCB community. Take a look here at Sunisa a special friend of one the members trying out a bass trombone for size. Significant others are well cared for and care well for all playing members.

Nicole is a very recent member of the band and currently sits in the repiano chair. She joined the band just a week before the registration cut off for the nationals. As you can see from the photo Nicole is not afraid of smiling and I believe quickly has become an important band character.

Rob plays what is arguably the most demanding instrument in the band - the soprano cornet. A seasoned professional player the MCB counts on Rob's considerable skills to provide the high frequency content so favoured by many modern brass band composers and arrangers. Ofcourse Rob's rather unique sense of humour does not go amiss either :)
